Christmas Candles For Refugees is a new body of work by Gary Wood.

A large group of Glazed Stoneware Tea-Light Containers forms a dedication to the plight of refugees and their children. The candle, being an international symbol of peace, faith and hope, is my inspiration for this project. The shape and colour of this work evokes the sea and also explores the connotations of Cargo and Vessel, which, with regard to large masses of people risking everything including their own lives, by embarking on perilous voyages, echoes darker times in human history. The candle is small consolation for this, but perhaps it offers hope in our hearts for the future of humankind and an awakening of peace in our world.
Gary Wood. November 2015.

This work was installed at Bath Abbey on Sunday 29th November as part of the Abbey’s annual Advent Candlelit Procession and Service.
